Caring for children’s teeth is important
How can you prevent dental fluorosis in your children?
We all know that the proper amount of fluoride helps prevent and control tooth decay.
However, consuming too much fluoride over a prolonged period when the teeth are forming under the gums will lead to dental fluorosis.
Here are some TIPs to prevent it:
1. Before your child reaches 2 years old, avoid using fluoride toothpaste, unless recommended by your child’s doctor or dentist.
2. Clean your child’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste no more than twice a day.
3. Use just a rice-sized volume of toothpaste if your child is younger than 3 years old and increase it to a pea-sized amount when the child is 3 to 6 years old.
4. Supervise and help your children with tooth brushing, encourage them to spit out the toothpaste rather than swallow it.
5. If your child’s paediatrician or dentist recommends a fluoride supplement (or a fluoride-containing vitamin supplement), inquire about any risk factors for decay and the possibility of dental fluorosis.
6. Fluoride supplements are not recommended if you live in an area with fluoridated water.
